Principal's Weekly Bulletin Aug. 20, 2012

Message to Staff…

Thank you for a great first week of school.  Revisiting our last two weeks together, I hope that you enjoyed our retreat, the celebration and motivation at our All Green Dot Day team meeting and our time on campus together in both PD and instruction.  I appreciate your patience, as we continue to work out the kinks, and my hat is off to all of you for your understanding and perseverance.

Returning to All Green Dot Day for a moment, it was great to have Dr. John Deasy, Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified school District as our keynote speaker.  Well actually, it was quite surprising.  I took note of some of the statements he made. Many of them crossed those political boundaries that have victimized our youth, and in some cases made the benefits of a great education in a possible dream. Some of the statements he made that resonated with me were…

“Take students with every gift they have…”
“Students are hungry for structure and challenge.”
“There is real honor in publicly getting better together.”
“We are in this work together.”
“Pride has a place. It models for students.”
“When they look at you they say, ‘Do you think I could be like you?’”

We are faced with great challenge ahead of us. We serve an expansive population with a range of both gifts and challenges. Wherever they are, despite the need, challenge, triumph and failure, we have committed to participate in the success of our students.  As Dr. Deasy closed his address, I could only think one statement, most apropos for the occasion… “It’s great to be a Westside Wave, where we transform potential into reality!”

Our week at a glance…

Please be sure to remind students of our first fundraising raffle, and the parameters in place regarding the purchase of tickets.  I have asked for some donations from outsiders so that students and families who cannot afford the purchase can still participate in the raffle.  Please let me know, with discretion, if you are aware of any students who might be faced with this issue.  It has also come to my attention that several students who matriculated from Cowan are exhibiting behavior that is not exemplary.  My plan is to address them as a group in an effort to redirect them and underscore our behavioral expectations.  If you have the names of specific students that you would like to share, please let me know ASAP.  This is our first full week of school, so I hope that you are geared up, well rested and ready to go.  Please be sure that your standards and aligned objective are clearly posted, as Casie and/or I will be conducting brief observations with each of you.  Supplies and ordered classroom items continue to be delivered.  Please be sure to let me know if you’re missing anything and you will be updated a to its arrival.
